An Invitation to New Members

  The Japan Society for Science Education (JSSE) was founded in 1977 to contribute to the progress and diffusion of "Education in/about science" and "Education by scientific and technological methods." For that reason, the areas of research covered by the JSSE are inherently broad (see Profile page). Moreover, with attention focusing on the science-technology-information based society, promotion of the "nation-building on the basis of innovative science and technology" policy by the Japanese government, and the drift away from science among children and the general public, the JSSE has further expanded its areas of research in recent years.
  Since these social changes bring significant alteration in school education, the issues of education in the sciences, arithmetic, and mathematics that accords to the time changing has arisen anew.
  A large number of professionals participate in research and discussions in the JSSE. These include researchers of science and education, teachers of the sciences, arithmetic, mathematics as well as industrial arts and home economics, researchers of children's cognitive learning in these disciplines, teachers interested in applying information-technology to school education, museum professionals responsible for exhibitions and communication and other faculty who recognizes problems in science and mathematics education, and teachers involved in international cooperation in science education, among others.

About JSSE

In order to contribute to the progress and diffusion of "Education in/about science" and "Education by scientific and technological methods," the purposes of the JSSE are as follows:

1. To play an active role in the publication of research and exchanges of knowledge/academic information on science education by JSSE members.

2. To support liaison and collaboration between JSSE members and with other related academic societies in Japan and other countries.

3. To contribute to research in science education by JSSE members and the implementation thereof.

As an additional purpose, the JSSE also collaborates and cooperates with educators, boards of education, and education centers.

Eligibility for Membership

Persons with knowledge and experience of science education, persons with an interest in research related thereto, and as an open society, particularly persons interested in promoting educational practice in science education and school teachers, researchers, and students are eligible to become members. Concretely, eligible persons include those engaged in research or practice in physics education, chemistry education, biology education, earth sciences education, science education, arithmetic and mathematics education, mathematical sciences education, statistics education, educational psychology, cognitive sciences, educational evaluation, educational technology, information education, educational uses of computers, educational information, research on teaching and learning, curriculum and instruction, teacher education, and related fields.

Mission

1. Promotion of academic exchanges and exchanges of information on educational research
The JSSE holds annual meetings, academic lectures, research meetings, symposiums, etc. to provide platforms for the presentation of research results encompassing the entire field of science education research and for exchanges of information by providing common topics. The Society publishes the "Journal of Science Education in Japan" as an academic journal which presents the results of academic research and supports information exchanges, and also provides timely academic information, information on annual conferences and meetings, and news on international conferences and other information in the JSSE newsletter, "Science Education Newsletter." The JSSE also holds various types of symposiums as activities of the Science Council of Japan "Science Education Research and Liaison Committee."

2. Promotion of academic research and educational research
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Grants in Aid for Scientific Research lists the division "Science education/subject pedagogy," which includes the subdivision "Science education," as an examination division in its Interdisciplinary Area. The JSSE is contributing to the promotion of academic research and educational research in this field.

3. Promotion of international exchanges
The JSSE serves as a liaison for international exchange activities in science education research, for example, by obtaining international information and introducing research in Japan to the international community by mutual communications with international organizations such as UNESCO, ICSU/CTS, OECD/CERI, ICASE, and others. The JSSE also publishes an English-language journal to publicize Japanese trends and results in science education research in other countries.
